For most young people, adulthood does not arrive on their 18th birthday. It develops gradually through experience, relationships, guidance, mistakes, and opportunities to learn.For young people who have experienced instability, trauma, family breakdown, exploitation, disrupted education, or time in care, this transition can be significantly more challenging.

At Oasis Care, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and valued, regardless of their background, identity, beliefs or circumstances. That is why we are proud to support Derby City Council’s “No Place for Hate” campaign and stand alongside organisations across the city in promoting dignity, equality and inclusion.

This article argues that progress in supported accommodation is rarely linear, and that when systems expect it to be, we risk misreading the young people we are trying to support, and ending placements that are, in fact, working.
